A Path Forward: Opportunities to participate in a DSHS planning process
It’s time to re-shape the future of disability services in Washington State: Will you help?
Something big is starting, and we want you to be part of it.
The Washington State Legislature has asked DSHS to build a 10-year Strategic Plan for developmental disabilities services. It’s called A Path Forward. This plan will shape the recommendations that go to the Legislature and the Governor about where the state invests in the DD service system for years to come.
That means it matters what goes into it. Gaps in services, long waits, hard-to-find supports, a stretched workforce, places where people feel left out: this is the moment to name them.
Our hope is simple: that every person with a developmental disability, and every family sees themselves reflected in the investments to come.
Here’s how you can take part:
Take the Survey
1. TAKE THE SURVEY NOW
The survey is open this month and is the first step. The goal is to hear from as many people as possible, so please fill it out and pass it on.
- Take the survey: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=q8TxnmB5Fk6PUJhIDPsQXzq_Pn0QSLNJlPxvMpm5vfpUQkpFRTA5VUlCRU1WWVU5SDJEWjI0RFhDQi4u
- Available in multiple languages
- Prefer to write? Share your ideas by email at ApathForward@dshs.wa.gov
Need help filling it out? You don’t have to do it alone. Contact your local Arc, a Parent to Parent program, the Developmental Disabilities Council, or one of the other partner organizations ready to help.

2. ATTEND A REGIONAL FOCUS GROUP
There are six in-person focus groups happening starting Monday, October 19th.
These groups are where people can give more detailed, concrete input into what the plan should say. Most will be held in rural areas, on purpose, to reach people who often feel far away from services and from decisions made in Olympia. Interpreters will be available.
You can view a webpage with links to register for these groups here:

3. LEARN MORE AND STAY INVOLVED
The survey is only the beginning. Once a draft plan takes shape, DSHS will open another survey so you can tell them whether they got it right.
The video below explains more about The Path Forward planning process and how you can get involved.

Please share this message with self-advocates, families, caregivers, providers and anyone who cares about the future of developmental disabilities services in Washington. The more voices in this plan, the stronger it will be.
